    Peace Park Plan

We love the history of our historical corner of the Greenville Peace Treaty Line, Ohio-Erie Canalway Towpath Trail and Scenic Byway, Buckeye Trail, the Great American Rail-Trail. and within sight of where the first white man Christian Federick Post, a Moravian missionary to the largest Delaware Native American settlement in Ohio in 1730. To have the opportunity to celebrate, encourage, and share such rich early Ohio history gives us great pleasure. Since we first started to make about a quarter acre of our little corner available to the public we've thought of a bunch of ideas and received a few great suggestions on how we may improve the visitor experience.

This is our wish list plan to improve our campsites for public usage.

  • Running

The Ohio-Erie Canal Towpath Trail is a great resource for runners! Long or short distance runners will enjoy getting physical exercise running to the Snack Shack.

Run to beautiful Tuscarawas county across the Stark county line on the Tuscarawas river at the Bolivar-McDonnell aqueduct trailhead! In 2013, the aqueduct bridge was built bringing the trail to the McDonnell trailhead. in 2017, continued trail dervelopment is planned to connect the last remaing gap in 2018 under the Wheeling & Laker Erie RR bridge.

A couple great articles regarding the towpath trail development of the Zoar canal lands and Bolivar McDonnelll aqueduct trailhead include:

  • Sublime Smoke

Fine BBQ and Craft Brew on the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail in beautiful Bolivar, Ohio

Sublime Smoke is the culmination of a chef's nomadic restaurant journey and a desire to move home.  Over 10 years of restaurant experience gave way to a food truck in Central Ohio in 2010.  Afforded the opportunity to move home and be surrounded with friends and family, Sublime Smoke now combines the food truck flavor in a sleek storefront with both indoor and outdoor seating.  Come experience deep, bold flavors combined with Tuscarawas Valley's finest craft beer list via tap, bottle, or can.

  • The story of Fort Laurens; Ohio's only Revolutionary war fort

The Towpath Trail Peace Park is located where the Greenville Treaty Line intersects with the Ohio-Erie canal towpath trail just west of the village of Bolivar, Ohio. The Greenville Peace Treaty specifically refers to Fort Laurens and runs from Greenville, Ohio on the west side of the state to about a mile and a half to where the Sandy creek enters the Tuscarawas River and from there north to Cleveland, Ohio. Fort Laurens is located only 1.5 miles east of the Peace Park on the towpath trail and we encourage everyone to hike there to visit. The Canal Lands section of the towpath trail has been adopted by the Bolivar-Zoar Rotary club who does a great job of helping the Tuscarawas Parks and Recreation to maintain the trail from Fort Laurens to Route 800.

Here's a very well-produced video by the Ohio Historical Connection of the story of Fort Laurens that's only 20 minutes long. It is also the story of how Ohio became settled shortly after the American Revolution and became the 17th state admitted to the Union on March 1st, 1803
